How to prepare for a wildlife safari while minimizing your environmental footprint. Packing light, packing smart, and packing for impact.
The difference between a tourist and a traveler is often found in their suitcase. For a safari at Save Wildlife, we encourage a "Leave No Trace" philosophy. Your gear should empower your experience while leaving zero footprints in the wild.
Sustainable Essentials
Start with your water. Plastic waste is a significant threat to river ecosystems. Bring a high-quality reusable bottle; our lodge provides filtered mountain water for refills. Use biodegradable sunscreens and insect repellents that don't introduce harmful chemicals into the soil or water. Bamboo toothbrushes and solid shampoos are excellent ways to reduce plastic weight and waste.
The Naturalist's Kit
A great pair of binoculars is non-negotiable. We recommend 8x42 or 10x42 magnifications for the best balance of field-of-view and light capture. Bring a small notebook and pen; sketching a track or noting the color of a bird's beak helps cement the experience in your memory far more than a digital photo ever could. Naturalist field guides are also available in our library to help you identify what you see.
Tech for the Jungle
Power can be intermittent in remote areas. A high-capacity solar power bank can be a lifesaver for charging your camera or phone. Speaking of cameras, bring extra memory cards—the jungle offers surprises at every turn, and you don't want to be deleting photos in the middle of a sighting. Remember to turn off all camera sounds and flashes; let the jungle provide the soundtrack and the lighting.
